What's The Point/Dot/Period?

Oh small, filled-in circle, how you confound me!

At the end of a sentence you are a period (or a full stop for our British friends).

In between radio station call numbers you are a point.

When I'm typing in Web addresses you are a dot.

Identity crisis much?

When three of them are put together, they are called ellipsis.

Indeed, the small, filled-in circle is a punctuation mark is very versatile.

My favorite punctuation mark? The semicolon. (Even though we don't use it much in media writing. Maybe that's why I like it...)

Notice the ellipsis.

We should use the semicolon more; it is excellent at showing close relationships between sentences.

However, the elipsis and I have had a falling out. I got back my students' first big stories yesterday, and I'm noticing the elipsis is getting way too much play.

In Mexico, everything is 'punto'. wwwPUNTOamazonPUNTOcom. It just doesn't sound right when you don't say 'dot'.

The way you're talking about the period is the way some people talk about God. It's called modalism, where there is really only one God. It's just that God changes his name when he puts on different hats. In heaven, he's 'father', on earth he's 'son', and in action he's 'spirit'.

But modalism is heresy Jeremy. We want to be good Trinitarians who believe in the unity yet diversity in the Father, Son, and Spirit. I think you're flirting with danger and you need to stop. Or else, St. Athanasius will go balistic on you. He's an Orthodox Gangsta.
