The Plunge Lede

This is a little cold, but gosh if it doesn't make me realize why I chose journalism.

"The abundance of bite-sized pieces scattered about gave readers multiple points of entry into yesterday's newspaper. Parched by a long story about tax policy that jumped from Page One, a reader could always count on finding a little oasis where he could replenish himself. Knowing that most pages contained a few shorts gave readers added reason to flip through the paper and nibble here and there."

I couldn't agree more. I love contemporary newspaper design; I think a balanced modular front page with a dominant photograph and strongly contrasted typographical elements is a work of art.

But we need more bite-size news items to entice readers. Not just in a stale "briefs" section. But actually mixed in with the rest of the copy.

As Shafer says, it's all about entry points.

PS- Few things are as fulfilling as accurately and efficiently reporting a major news item (like a Bus Plunge story) in 30 words or less. God bless the summary lede.
